It all starts with an idea

An electric conversion is something I have been considering for a while. I like the idea of doing something different than the norm. So with my old mk4 up for sale I need to actually start doing something rather than just thinking about it.

So, what car?
That is the question.....

It may surprise you to hear that a cobra was not at the top of my list for the conversion.

I originally said to myself and others that I didn't feel it was right to convert a car where the engine was the essence or heart of the car. So this removed the Cobra out of my consideration, I always loved the GT40's however the engine is even more a part of that car than the cobra.
At Stoneleigh 2021 I walked round for inspiration, I always liked the idea of a Porsche Speedster, however in the flesh they didn't give me the "fizz" that the cobra does. So the search continues.

Now I've always been partial to an E type, an E type actually would make a very nice conversion, it gives me the "fizz" and also mechanically it has the space in the right places for a good size battery pack and also a motor.
However I can't afford an E-Type that doesn't need a full restoration, and a full E-Type restoration is a job in itself. Maybe let's not bite off more than I can chew.

I still can't decide...

Onto the Gardner Douglas open day of Spring 2021. I was mentioning to people at the open day about wanting to do a electric conversion and hinting about doing a EV cobra, fully expecting to be marched off the premises, however the ears were pricking up. Especially that of Andy Burrows so I began to think would the Cobra be suitable for a conversion, as much as I loved my V8 maybe it could work as a car. I mean, of course it will physically work. But if all we cared about in a car was it mechanically moving we would never have this love affair with automobiles. It's how you feel about them, not necessarily how they perform the task of being a mode of transportation. I also sold my V8 Cobra at the GD owners meet, as sad as I was to see it go, I was happier it was going to someone who was actually going to use it. I think I spent more time cleaning it than driving it.

So with an empty garage it was time to actually start doing something not just researching and making excel spreadsheets.
